Neuchatel Tourism: the DuPeyrou Hotel

At the beginning
Nestled in the heart of the city of Neuchâtel, in a calm and relaxing setting not far from the train station, you will find the DuPeyrou Hotel. It was built between 1765 and 1771 at the request of the wealthy Neuchâtelois Pierre-Alexandre DuPeyrou, who wanted to establish his residence outside the city walls. His palace was then surrounded by vineyards and had several annexes, including a magnificent orangery and a French-style garden.
Pierre-Alexandre DuPeyrou was a close friend of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. He was actually the one who published the first complete edition of the writer’s works after his death. He also attempted to erect an Egyptian-style monument in memory of his friend. The project did not occur, and all that remains of it today are two sphinxes at the entrance of the garden, which have become the emblem of the DuPeyrou Hotel.
Over time, the palace changed functions several times. From being a private mansion, it was converted into the Neuchâtel Museum of Art and History around 1860 by the city, which restored its salons under the direction of architect Léo Châtelain.
And now?
Today, the DuPeyrou Hotel houses a renowned gastronomic restaurant (16/20 Gault Millau) that is well worth a visit.
In 2022, the establishment was taken over by three entrepreneurs from Neuchâtel, as well as chef Edmon Bavois. They succeeded the Penlington family, who had run the restaurant for nearly 25 years.
Full of ideas and enthusiasm, these new owners have managed to give the place a sense of renewal without losing the historical charm of the palace. The restaurant on the ground floor is the most striking example, combining the charm of the modern and the old, creating a soothing atmosphere for guests to enjoy their meal in a unique setting.
The garden, on the other hand, has recently been renovated to restore its former glory. As for the three historical salons on the upper floor, they are classified as heritage sites and can be reserved for receptions, weddings, or banquets, accommodating up to 80 guests in the largest one.
And what treasures of history and beauty! Entering these salons is like leap centuries back in time. The Grand Salon, the French Salon, and the Green Salon are elegantly decorated with restored tapestries, period windows and mirrors, original marquetry parquet, marble fireplaces, woodwork, gilding... everything to evoke the splendor of the past!
In conclusion
In the end, reserving a table at the DuPeyrou Hotel is like embarking on a true journey through the centuries. It allows you to immerse yourself in the rich historical heritage of Neuchâtel while savoring the finest cuisine it has to offer.
From its opulent past surrounded by vineyards, its transformation into a Museum of Art and History, to its renaissance as an exceptional venue for events and a gastronomic restaurant, the DuPeyrou Palace is a true icon of Swiss history and refinement.
By preserving this gem of their culture and history, the people of Neuchâtel proudly perpetuate the heritage of their region and warmly invite visitors to discover the timeless splendor of the DuPeyrou Hotel.
